It’s a Masala Festa!!!

Picture it: a young Indo-Canadian girl from the glorious Toronto suburb of Scarborough wakes up one morning and finds herself in Italy. After her initial stupor she realizes that she is married to a sweet Milanese gentleman with a penchant for ugly shirts circa 1987. For the purposes of this story let’s call him Mimmo. She also happens to be the mother of two drooly humans, aka Bellie and Diggy, and two felines, Beppa and Sausage (unfortunately their real names). Cut to girl screaming for mercy.

Well, I may have exaggerated there a bit. But I thought it was a more captivating intro than “I’m a working mother of two from Canada who moved to Italy over a decade ago.”

What else can I say about myself? I’m a translator but also the head chef, laundrywoman, interior decorator, dietician, diaper changer and story-teller of Casa Mia. In my free time I enjoy long walks on the beach and freezing baby food. For more background info, you can read my article in Toronto Star’s Desi Life magazine.

But enough about me. It’s time to join the Ultimate Blog Party!!

Ultimate Blog Party 2008

A huuuuge thanks to the fine ladies at 5 Minutes for Mom for hosting the best festa in the world. Can’t wait to par-tay with you all over the world!!

Soooo, without further ado, I’d like to welcome you to Milanese Masala, a brand spankin’ new blog featuring my (sometimes snarky) reflections on life in “Da Boot”. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Italy. I love it like a woman loves her husband. And like any long-suffering wife, sometimes that husband does things that occasionally make my blood boil, like leaving the toilet seat up or voting a porn star into parliament. But don’t worry, I’ll talk about the good stuff, too. Of course there’s the food, music, history, natural beauty, politics and culture which make life a bit more interesting than in Scarberia. If you don’t believe me, ask the Italian Minister of Culture Francesco Rutelli.

Then there are the mommy adventures which could fill a book alone. My 4 year-old daughter and 18 month-old son never give me a moment’s rest. I was actually going to post this earlier but little Diggy decided it was the perfect time to play with the bidet and succeeded in flooding my new bathroom. Classic! Instead Bellie is crushing on Leo from Little Einsteins and talks about him non-stop. Awww, she likes nerds just like mom. I’m also working hard to raise my kids to be bilingual, happy, well-adjusted citizens of the world. Fingers crossed!

As for why I called my blog Milanese Masala? Well, I’ve been living in the Milan area for 12 loooong foggy years so I guess that explains the Milanese part. And apart from the obvious Indian connection, I thought the term masala described me to a tee. A mixture of many spices. I’m a little bit Indian, a little bit Canadian, a little bit Italian and a little bit rock and roll. And blended all together, I pack quite the punch.

But I must warn you gals, since I’m taking my baby steps in the blogosphere and work full-time as a corporate translator and have a young family, my blog is still quite bare at the moment . Plus, I may not always have the time to write pages and pages every day. Please forgive! But as my old English lit teacher used to say: it’s quality not quantity.

Speaking of quality, I have some fine tunes to share with y’all to get this party started right. I’m a huge music fan and I plan on featuring Italian and international artists on my blog. And tonight is Oldies Night! My Italian party selection is a 70’s hit from Milanese legend Adriano Celentano. It’s called “Prisencolinesunaciusol” (???!!???) and it’s famous not only for being a cool song but also because the lyrics were written in a fake English gibberish. And aren’t the dancers amazing?

My second dance hit, Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money”, is dedicated to working moms everywhere.

Oh, and since I work hard for my Euros, it would be nice to win a prize now and then. And the Ultimate Blog Party is giving away some amazing prezzies this year. Since I live in Italy and have a love affair with Calabrian chili peppers, I would looooooove to win the prize on Cherrye’s My Bella Vita. She’s giving away a FREE two-night stay at her beautiful B&B Il Cedro in Catanzaro. I also wouldn’t mind winning the cute pocket placemats from Comfort Joy Designs or the Blog Makeover courtesy of Shauna. Prizes 58 and 71 are pretty cool too and any kid-related prize would be muchly appreciated! Even if you’re not a blogger, you can win big too. Find out how at the Ultimate Blog Party hosted by the gals at 5 Minutes for Mom.

So…. enjoy, party on and hope to see you back soon!!!!!
